July 27th Gary Gygax Day

On this day in 1938 Gary Gygax was born and we celebrate that birth for all the gaming that he was a major part of bringing into our lives.

If you've never read any of the books that talk about Gygax, then go check out the Wikipedia page at Gary_Gygax for an overview. Take it with a grain of salt though, because like all Wikipedia pages the accuracy is only a poor reflection of reality. For instance it tries to imply that Gary created the LARP. But follow the link and you will find he is not even mentioned. I suppose it is only appropriate that in an article about Gygax it is full of fantasy.

The main take away for me is that he was a bright kid that started playing adult level games at an early age and like all bright kids he got in a lot of trouble. These days they would diagnose him with a whole alphabet soup of diseases pump him full of mood altering drugs and he would never have been part of anything like D&D or any of the other games that he had a hand in.

Although it is a good thing his dad moved him to WI and put him in just the right place to be a game player and writer. Good for us anyway. Thank you Gary, Happy Birthday!!
